Reiki: Healing Through Intention

I would love to begin this article with a phrase that many have shared, but one I never grow tired of repeating to my clients, friends, and students in my Therapeutic Massage classes:

“In everything we do, what truly matters is the intention behind it.”

When our intentions are pure and aligned with love and respect for others, we create the foundation for meaningful transformation. That is why, before supporting others on their healing journey, it is essential to set aside our ego, be honest with ourselves about how we manage our energy and emotions, and offer those in our care a genuine sense of compassion and goodwill.

When it comes to Reiki, I particularly appreciate a definition I found in the book What Is Reiki? by Mónica Simone and Jorge R. Bertuccio:

REI represents the universe, the Whole, the Tao, or the universal intelligence that governs the functioning of the cosmos. It is the absolute order, referred to by some as God or Divine Order.

KI represents energy, vital force, the spark of life, essence, or the force of nature that can be transmitted, stored, and perceived.

When we feel aligned with the Cosmos, the Universe, or Rei, we become more attuned to our bodies and more open to a deeper process of self-awareness and healing. It is through this connection that we begin to understand the unity of mind, body, and spirit that is so often discussed.

Our thoughts, words, emotions, lifestyle habits, and even the foods we eat can influence our physical and emotional well-being. Although illness is not something we consciously invite or permit, becoming aware of these influences encourages us to reflect on how we care for ourselves.

This brings us to an important question:

Are we giving our bodies what they need to live in harmony with love and well-being?

How Can Reiki Support Our Energy Healing Journey?

When attending a Reiki session, it is important to set aside expectations and allow yourself to experience the moment with an open mind. Our doubts, worries, and constant mental activity can sometimes make it difficult to relax and reconnect with ourselves.

Deep, mindful breathing can help calm the nervous system, encourage the body's parasympathetic response, and promote a profound state of relaxation.

During a session, the Reiki practitioner gently places their hands on specific areas of your body or holds them a few inches above you. You may experience sensations such as warmth, tingling, or subtle vibrations throughout your body.

Afterward, many people describe feeling deeply peaceful, mentally refreshed, and more connected to their inner awareness.

Although Reiki is not a conventional medical treatment, it has been introduced as a complementary wellness practice in some hospitals and healthcare facilities across the United States and other parts of the world.

Some studies have explored its potential benefits for relaxation, stress reduction, anxiety, and overall patient comfort. However, scientific evidence remains limited, and Reiki has not been established as a treatment that accelerates surgical recovery or reduces medication side effects.

In certain integrative healthcare settings, complementary approaches such as Reiki and aromatherapy are offered alongside conventional medical care to support relaxation, emotional comfort, and the overall patient experience.

These practices are intended to complement, rather than replace, appropriate medical treatment.

Reiki + Cosmic Energy

Considering the sense of balance and relaxation that Reiki may bring, imagine combining this practice with the wisdom of cosmic energy—the energy believed, within traditional Chinese metaphysics, to flow between Heaven and Earth.

Through the Chinese calendar known as the Tong Shu, sometimes referred to as the Book of Universal Knowledge, and the principles of BaZi (Chinese astrology) and Ze Ri (auspicious date selection), we can identify dates traditionally considered favorable for energetic cleansing, renewal, and restoring balance.

Within this spiritual framework, choosing an auspicious day for Reiki becomes an intentional ritual: an opportunity to release what no longer serves us, welcome positive energy, and reconnect with ourselves when stress and daily responsibilities feel overwhelming.

Every month offers days that are considered especially favorable for receiving Reiki.
